Mysterious caves lie beneath Kentucky, where a secret highway lies, inhabited by a strange people in Kentucky Route Zero. Formally, the game is a point-and-click adventure in a surreal setting, but focuses solely on exploration and character dialogue, though many consider it interactive theater or even magical realism. It tells the story of people searching for their place in the world, a story of an impossible future, unpaid debts, poverty, and loneliness. When dusk falls over the city and the buzz of insects replaces the singing of birds, even on familiar roads, you can get lost and end up on another, secret highway. People live and work here, very unusual ones: a repairwoman who works alongside ghosts, a delivery man fulfilling his last order, robots playing musical instruments, and a boy with a pet eagle. Local communities struggle to survive against the backdrop of a power company that controls everything. The adventure is divided into episodes, all accessible from the start, and the plot is divided into theatrical scenes and acts. There are no classic point-and-click concepts here, puzzles, pixel hunting, or inventory, but rather contemplation and communication, where the player's impressions and emotions come first. The story centers on a courier named Conway, who is about to retire but still works in an antique shop. His last order is at 2 Dogwood Drive, Kentucky, but the destination isn't marked on maps; instead, he must travel via Route Zero, located in the caves. During his search, the hero must explore all possible routes, driving across the state by car, boat, and flying on an eagle.
