Project Zomboid Download takes players to a different, apocalyptic future. The sickness spread over the world due to the leak of a secret virus. The globe was soon overrun by the sick, who became ruthless zombies. The remaining healthy individuals are compelled to battle for their lives in harsh circumstances and survive by any means possible. One of the survivor camps in either West Point or Muldraug will be led by the player. Given that the player is in charge of numerous human lives, this entails a significant amount of responsibility.

Project Zomboid's gameplay is divided into several parts:

• Survivors are humanity's last hope. The player must regularly monitor the psychological state of their charges; otherwise, unpredictable events will occur. Also, residents should not sit idle, as everyone can be useful.
• Resource extraction: the remaining land suitable for agriculture must be used to the maximum advantage. People have the opportunity to grow a variety of crops, but care must be taken to prevent the virus from entering the plant.

• Combat zombies have a herd instinct, so the main challenge is the sheer number of enemies. The player can set up ambushes and use various tricks to defeat the infected en masse, rather than one at a time.
